His father, Robert Federer, is a Swiss from Bernice near the border between Switzerland, Austria and Germany. His mother, Lynette Federer, of Kempton Park, Gauteng, is a South African whose ancestors were Dutch and French Huguenots. Federer has one brother, older sister Diana, who is the mother of a set of twins.
Career
Federer became a professional in 1998 and was consistently ranked in the top ten from October 2002 to November 2016. He is currently ranked fourth in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Federer has won 18 singles titles at the Grand Slam, the most in history for a male tennis player, and held the number one spot in the ATP rankings for 237 consecutive weeks and a record total of 302 weeks.
He is among eight men who have secured a career in the Grand Slam. He has reached a record 28 men’s singles Grand Slam tournaments, including 10 in a row from the 2005 Wimbledon Championships to the 2007 US Open. ATP Championship records include Federer winning six ATP World Tour finals and playing in the finals in all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. Federer is married to former women’s tennis player Mirka Vavrinec. Wavrinec retired from the tour in 2002 due to a foot injury. They married at Wenkenhof Villa in Riehen near Basel on April 11, 2009, surrounded by a small group of close friends and family. In July 2009, Mirka gave birth to two identical twin girls, Mila Rose and Charlene Riva.
