Early Life
Lionel Messi was born in Rosario, Argentina on the 24th of June, 1987. His father, Jorge Horacio Messi, worked in a steel mill and his mother, Celia Maria Cuccittini, was a part-time cleaner. Messi joined the Rosario Football Club and played for Newell’s Old Boys when he was just six years old.
When Lionel Messi was 10 years old, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, and his father could no longer afford his medical treatment. Newell agreed to contribute but later reneged on his promise. Barcelona’s sporting director, Carles Rexach, has offered to pay the medical bills if Messi can move to Spain. They moved to an apartment near the Camp Nou stadium. Messi developed homesickness after his mother and siblings returned to Rosario while they were staying in Barcelona with his father. A year later, Messi joined the Royal Spanish Football Federation where he became part of the “Baby Dream Team”, Barcelona’s greatest group of young footballers.
Career
At the time he was also the youngest player to score for Barcelona. During the 2005-2006 season, Messi began being paid as a member of the first team and also acquired Spanish citizenship. He also appeared for the first time in the Spanish First Division. Messi received a standing ovation during his first match after scoring alongside superstar Ronaldinho. Out of his 17 league matches, he scored six goals. He scored one goal in six Champions Leagues’. In 2006, Messi became the youngest Argentine to play and score in the FIFA World Cup.
After the World Cup, in the 2006-2007 season, Messi sustained a metatarsal fracture, which took three months to recover. He returned to the match against Racing Santander, as an indirect substitute. In March of that season, he scored a hat-trick against Real Madrid, making him the first player since Ivan Zamorano to do so in El Clasico. In the 2007-2008 season, Messi led Barcelona to the top four in the Spanish League. He won the nomination as a striker for the FIFA ProWorld XI Player Award and was chosen by the Marca newspaper as the best player in the world. Other newspapers followed suit and said that Messi should receive the Ballon d’Or. He finally took his first win in 2009, at the age of 22, winning three in a row every year. He also won the Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In 2012, he set the Spanish League and European records for most goals scored in a season. This decided his fate as the best scorer in Barcelona’s history. Messi, now captain of Barcelona, finished second in the Ballon d’Or award behind rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the following two seasons. In 2014, Messi led Argentina to the finals of the World Cup, in which he also won the Golden Ball.
